Strategy Drills
Offense Defense Drill
Group Size: Game (10)
Skill Level: Intermediate
Improves: Pack, Blocking, Strategy, Communication/Teamwork, Building Walls/Waterfalls
Equipment: Whistle, Timer, 3x5 Cards (1 black, 1 white)
Duration: 10 minutes
Everyone lines up as if they are scrimmaging (one team is black, the other team white), with the exception of only 1 jammer. The jammer will hold the black and white cards, skate at a slow to moderate pace and stay behind the pack for the entire drill. On the whistle, a jam begins and the jammer will hold up one of the cards indicating which jammer is approaching the pack on a scoring pass. The blockers must be looking for the card the jammer holds up. For a white card, all players on the black team must work their way to the front of the pack (playing defense) and build a wall while the players on the white team maintain their positions (no blocking). For a black card, all players on the white team must work their way to the front of the pack (playing defense) and build a wall while the players on the black team maintain their positions (no blocking). Have the jammer change the cards they hold up several times during a 90 second jam. The pack must never stray more than 20 feet from the jammer. After running this drill a few minutes allow the opposing team to begin blocking (playing offense) on the team attempting to get all their players to the front of the pack. Reset the pack at the end of every 90 seconds.
Pivot Front Drill
Group Size: Game (10)
Skill Level: Intermediate
Improves: Pack, Jamming, Pivoting, Blocking, Strategy, Communication/Teamwork, Building Walls/Waterfalls
Equipment: Whistle, Timer
Duration: 10-15 minutes
Everyone lines up as if they are scrimmaging, with the exception of only 1 jammer (Team A has pivot and three blockers, Team B has pivot, jammer and 3 blockers). On the whistle, a jam begins and the team without the jammer must keep their pivot at the front of the pack unobstructed so the pivot can break once the other teams jammer has broke. The team with the jammer must focus on blocking the other team’s pivot. Neither team should be concerned with blocking the jammer, as the goal and focus of the jammer is to find holes in the pack; break through the pack and complete a scoring pass. Reset the pack and switch the teams at the end of every 90 seconds or when the jammer and pivot have both broke on a scoring pass.
